Odisha Adarsha Vidyalaya needs Professional Librarians

Bhubaneswar 13 June 2021:  Odisha Library Academy (OLA) has been leading the Library professional community in Odisha. On Saturday, the Academy has sent a letter to the Hon’ble Minister of School & Mass Education, Government of Odisha for requesting to the filling of Librarian posts in Odisha Adarsha Vidyalaya Schools. The Odisha Adarsha Vidyalaya (OAV) is the brainchild of Hon’ble Chief Minister, Shri Naveen Patnaik, who takes a personal interest in shaping these Vidyalayas through the 5T principles adopted by the state government.

Odisha Adarsha Vidyalaya Sangathan was established in 2015 with the vision “to reach out and provide quality education to each deserving child from across Odisha” and mission “to make Odisha Adarsha Vidyalaya is a role model for the country”. The main objective is to set up the CBSE-English Medium School model one in each Block to provide mainstream education in the line of Kendriya Vidyalaya (KV) and Navodaya Vidyalayas (NV). School Libraries play an important role in helping in improving learning outcomes. It is regarded as the heart of any educational institution. School Libraries always help in improving reading habits among school students, who laid a foundation stone in reading habit culture in the society. In addition, Libraries plays important role in community engagement, career counselling, etc.

All KVs and NVs have strong School Libraries in line with CBSE requirements. To achieve the above goal of establishing a School Library model in all OAVs with the recruitment of professional librarians is needed. As per the information, Govt. of Odisha sanctioned 237 posts of Librarians post for these Schools. It has already been more than 4 years; no professional Librarians have been recruited in these Adarsha Vidyalaya. In Odisha, many young Library and Information Science (LIS) post-graduates with experience as Library trainees are eagerly waiting for the librarian posts in OAVs. Hope, the government will take action to fill up the Librarian posts with a professional librarian in all OAVs of the state.
