Nobel Peace Laureate Kailash Satyarthi addresses journalists

Nobel Peace Laureate Shri Kailash Satyarthi addressing the media in Bhopal today

BhopalAsia’s oldest college of journalism, Makhanlal Chaturvedi University, hosted Nobel Peace Laureate Kailash Satyarthi at the orientation of their new batch of students.

Addressing the young crowd, Mr. Satyarthi said, “You have the power of the pen, you have the power of words. A word once was written becomes eternal. What you say, write and how you use your words forms the very fabric of the country’s social, economic and political ecosystem. Your words will always have power and you have that grave responsibility on your shoulders”

As students of journalism, he encouraged the assembled hall to look closely at the ‘why’ even before they begin talking on the ‘what’. He strongly articulated that the students should practice responsible journalism and ensure that the truth is put forward, in as impartial a manner as possible, as the country looks to the fourth estate for opinions and guidance.

Mr. Satyarthi expressed deep dismay at the growing menace of child sexual abuse and child trafficking in the country. He spoke about the many tragedies he has encountered in his 37-year long fight and how they reinforce his will to fight for the children of India.

He reiterated that journalists have the power to change public perception, mobilize people and get them to action. Social Justice is impossible without education and media (journalists) play a vital role in educating the citizens of a nation.

Later in the evening, Mr. Satyarthi also spoke with several print publications, TV Channels, and new media on violence against children.

Earlier this month, Mr. Satyarthi also spoke with religious leaders on the matters of violence against children and received tremendous support for his mission and vision.
