John Shegerian, Chairman and CEO of Electronic Recyclers International (ERI), the nation’s leading recycler of electronic waste, joined representatives from the Consumer Technology Association (CTA)™ — formerly Consumer Electronics Association (CEA)® — VIZIO and Samsung today for a Senate briefing on best practices for consumer technology materials and management.
The panel discussion, featuring Walter Alcorn, Vice President of Environmental Affairs for CTA; Mark Newton, Head of Corporate Environmental and Regulatory Affairs for Samsung; Caitlin Sanchez, Counsel for VIZIO; and Shegerian, shared insights with the Senate on the lengths the consumer tech industry has taken to reduce, reuse and recycle.
“It’s an honor to have been asked to participate in this important discussion with our nation’s elected officials,” said Shegerian. “Caitlin, Mark and Walter represent organizations that have been at the cutting edge of sustainability as well as corporate responsibility, so they are all genuine experts on the topic. Source reduction, responsible recycling and reuse and reusability are themes we covered in this meeting and are all vitally important for our government to be aware of, as we move forward with future innovations in and demand for consumer technology.”
“This panel is an important opportunity to discuss the latest trends in materials management in our industry,” said Walter Alcorn, vice president of environmental affairs, CTA. “According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the consumer electronics industry has transitioned from the fastest-growing portion of the municipal waste stream to the fastest-declining. And we continue to partner with the government and other stakeholders to ensure consumers enjoy unprecedented awareness of and access to recycling resources.”
The panelists also reflected on highlights from CES 2016 in January and how several innovations came to light from a materials standpoint.
CTA is the owner and producer of the CES, the world’s gathering place for all who thrive on the business of consumer technology.
