New Delhi, May 14: The Centre has launched the Mizoram Ginger Mission, a ₹189.79 crore convergence-based initiative aimed at boosting ginger cultivation and improving income opportunities for farmers in the state.
The mission was formally launched by Union Minister for Development of the North Eastern Region Jyotiraditya Scindia, who said the programme is designed to strengthen both production and value addition in the ginger sector.
Mizoram’s ginger, which carries Geographical Indication (GI) certification, is recognised for its higher quality, containing 6–8 per cent oleoresin compared to the global average of around 3 per cent. Despite this advantage, farmers currently earn only ₹8–15 per kilogram, while the product’s value in international markets can exceed ₹500 per kilogram along the supply chain.
The mission seeks to bridge this gap by improving processing, strengthening supply chains, and enhancing market access for farmers. Officials said the initiative will focus on linking growers more directly with higher-value markets and reducing dependence on intermediaries.
The programme is expected to support better price realisation for farmers and promote Mizoram’s position as a key producer of high-quality ginger in India’s North Eastern region.
