New Delhi, June 9: The Government of India has stated that the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system has fundamentally transformed the delivery of welfare schemes, with nearly ₹50 lakh crore transferred directly into the bank accounts of beneficiaries since its rollout.
Officials described DBT as a landmark reform that has reshaped the way subsidies and social welfare benefits are delivered, ensuring faster, more transparent, and more efficient transfer of funds to eligible citizens across the country.
The system has helped streamline multiple government welfare programmes by reducing duplication, minimising delays, and eliminating intermediaries in the transfer process. As a result, beneficiaries receive financial assistance directly, improving accessibility and reducing leakages in public distribution systems.
According to government assessments, DBT has strengthened accountability and improved targeting of subsidies, ensuring that benefits reach intended recipients more effectively. The platform integrates digital banking infrastructure with Aadhaar-linked identification systems, enabling seamless and secure fund transfers at scale.
The initiative has been widely recognised as a key driver of financial inclusion, bringing millions of citizens into the formal banking system and encouraging greater adoption of digital financial services, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas.
Officials noted that DBT has also enhanced the efficiency of major welfare schemes covering areas such as food security, fertiliser subsidies, pensions, scholarships, and fuel support. The improved delivery mechanism has allowed for better monitoring and real-time tracking of fund disbursement.
Experts view the DBT framework as one of the most significant governance reforms in recent years, contributing to improved fiscal discipline and better utilisation of public resources. It is also seen as a model for leveraging technology to improve service delivery in large-scale welfare systems.
The government reiterated its commitment to further strengthening the DBT ecosystem by expanding coverage, improving digital infrastructure, and ensuring last-mile delivery of benefits to all eligible citizens.
