India’s Fiscal Strategy Turning More Growth-Oriented, Strengthening Domestic Demand: S&P Global

New Delhi, June 16: India’s fiscal policy framework is steadily evolving in a direction that supports stronger domestic growth and long-term economic resilience, according to S&P Global.

In its latest assessment, the global ratings agency observed that India’s approach to public finances reflects a clearer emphasis on growth-enabling expenditure, particularly through sustained capital investment and targeted policy support aimed at strengthening demand within the economy.

S&P Global noted that continued focus on infrastructure development, productive government spending, and calibrated fiscal consolidation is helping improve macroeconomic stability while reinforcing the foundations of future growth. The report added that this balanced strategy is enabling India to navigate external uncertainties while maintaining robust domestic momentum.

The agency highlighted that India’s fiscal stance increasingly prioritises efficiency in public expenditure and long-term capacity building, with investments directed toward infrastructure, connectivity, and productivity-enhancing sectors. These measures, it said, are expected to support private sector activity and crowd-in additional investment over time.

Experts cited in the report suggested that India’s fiscal evolution reflects a shift towards a more structured and forward-looking policy approach, with an emphasis on sustaining growth while preserving fiscal discipline.

S&P Global further stated that the strengthening of domestic demand drivers, combined with policy stability, positions India favourably for sustained medium-term growth, even amid a challenging global economic environment.

The overall assessment underscores a continued transition towards a more growth-centric fiscal framework, supported by strategic public investment and improving economic fundamentals.
