Pune is an extremely important city for Sweden. It has the third-largest cluster of Swedish companies in India, established in the 1960s, when major manufacturing corporations like Sandvik, SKF, Alfa Laval, Atlas Copco and Tetra Pak, to name just a few set up base in here. Erstwhile Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru had granted all these companies land which was called Sveanagar (Dehu road).
Today in Maharashtra alone, there are 108 Swedish companies, 65 HQs, 27 production plants and 34000 direct employees.
