Hyderabad, 20 November 2023: A 41-year-old woman with a history of primary infertility and miscarriages achieved a successful pregnancy with the help of advanced technology at the Indira IVF Hyderabad centre. Varsha, 41 and Munish, 47 (names changed) have been trying to have children for the last five years after their marriage however, their journey to parenthood was fraught with challenges until they approached the city-based hospital.
The couple had undergone four IVF cycles in the past of which two IVF cycles were unsuccessful and two led to missed abortions. Upon evaluation at Indira IVF Hyderabad, it was found that Varsha had a bulky uterus with a fibroid measuring 3.15 cm in length, 3.45 cm in width, and 3.05 cm in thickness. The number of eggs in Varsha’s ovaries were found to be less which was indicated by low count in ultrasound scan & low levels of Anti-Müllerian Hormone. Munish’s tests indicated the condition of teratozoospermia, that is, a high percentage of abnormally shaped sperm.
Elaborating on the procedure, Dr. Trupthi Ganapathi from Indira IVF Hyderabad said, “Our approach involved a comprehensive treatment plan that treated the cause of infertility. This included hormonal treatment for egg development, blastocyst culture followed up Chromosomal screening to rule out Aneuploidy (abnormal chromosomes in Embryo) with the removal of the large fibroid through laparoscopic myomectomy. As the couple also faced multiple pregnancy failures in the past, we performed lymphocyte immunisation therapy (LIT) through the paternal lymphocyte immunisation (PLI) method which involved the injection of her husband’s white blood cells to get her immune system ready for pregnancy.”
Keeping in mind the patient’s health and highest probability of a live birth, the team proceeded to transfer a single embryo. Two weeks hence, Varsha tested positive for a beta-human chorionic gonadotropin (bHCG) test, indicating a pregnancy. The couple is now 16 weeks pregnant.
