Mumbai 14 June 2020: In the past two and a half months, over 500 voluntary blood donors from every corner of Mumbai have traveled to Nanavati Super Speciality Hospital to save lives of patients in dire need of blood transfusion. The heart-warming act of these Samaritans came at a time when blood banks across Mumbai were suffering an acute shortage of blood and blood components.
World Blood Donor Day is observed every year on 14th June. The purpose behind why the day is celebrated is to promote blood donation among people.
The blood collected from these Samaritans helped hundreds of patients needing blood transfusions due to thalassemia, cancer, dialysis, and lifesaving surgeries of emergency trauma patients at the hospital. Dr. Rinku Bhatia, Head of Blood Transfusion Department, Nanavati Super Speciality Hospital said, “They created a special pass for the blood donors to be able to travel during the lockdown and donate blood. Honest and kind-hearted Mumbai Police officials also offered their support for the smooth transportation of these voluntary donors during the lockdown. Many of these donors have been donating blood from the past 10-20 years and said they felt extremely satisfied after this lifesaving act”.
Voluntary Blood Donor Mr. Subhash Churi – a nearby resident of Vile Parle delightfully said,” I got a call from Nanavati Hospital that they need blood for Thalassemia patient and I happily came to Nanavati hospital to donate blood for the needy. I am honored to donate blood during tough times where one needed blood desperately. Nanavati Hospital doctors were really supportive and guided me as they two separate zones one for COVID and other for non-covid”.
As suggested by the honorable Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Udhhav Thackeray, these acts of voluntary blood donors will be extremely essential to address possible blood shortages in the future. Hence on the occasion of this World Blood Donors Day, we appeal you to donate blood at the blood bank nearest to your home or workplace, after ensuring your personal safety.
Nanavati Hospital has been at the forefront of forming policies for both COVID and Non-COVID emergency procedures. The blood donation will save the lives of patients, in need of blood transfusion due to emergency surgeries or clinical complications.
A big shout out to all the Voluntary Blood Donors to come to Hospital and donate blood for the cause.
Stay safe, donate blood, save lives.
