As India Observes Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Experts Stress Understanding Hereditary Risk and Confronting Rural Realities; Highlight Future Potential of Stem Cell Science

New Delhi, Nov 10: As the annual pink ribbon celebration hits, Lifecell Diagnostics is calling for a more meaningful and inclusive national conversation on breast cancer, evolving the conversation from social media urban awareness campaigns to understanding, access, and genetic literacy considerations, particularly in rural India.
Breast cancer is still the most prevalent cancer in Indian women, with the grim statistic that a large proportion are diagnosed at advanced stages, influencing survival rate greatly. Of particular, yet sometimes neglected, importance is the contribution of heredity. Nearly 5-10% of breast cancers are hereditary and caused by inherited gene mutations such as BRCA1 and BRCA2.
Breast cancer is now the most frequently diagnosed cancer in Indian women, accounting for roughly 1 in 8 women diagnosed with cancer overall. There are over two lakh (200,000) new cases of breast cancer in Indian women reported each year according to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR); the concern over breast cancer is heightened with nearly 50% of cases being diagnosed at later stages with poorer treatment outcomes. In addition, awareness and rates of routine screening remain low compared to many countries in the Western world. These are all leading to an increase in mortality.
While urban towns are slowly accepting preventive care, the picture in rural India is very different. Most women are denied access to healthcare centers, have delayed diagnosis owing to ignorance, and social taboos regarding the mention of women’s health. Research has shown that in rural areas, breast cancer tends to go undetected until the critical phases, resulting in more deaths.
In conjunction with diagnostics, innovation in regenerative medicine and stem cell research is ushering in new horizons of healthcare. As India’s first stem cell banking pioneer, LifeCell highlights the significance of preserving stem cells today to become a valuable contributor to future treatments, including cancer therapy and recovery support.
This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, LifeCell Diagnostics will organize:
- Educational webinars and digital sessions with thought leaders in genetics and women’s health.
- Awareness in urban and semi-urban locations with straightforward information about risk factors.
- Special pricing offers on cancer screening and BRCA testingto make genetic testing more accessible for individuals at high risk.
- Free genetic counsellingfor patients identified as high risk through cancer screening or with a family history of multiple cancers.
The goal is to inform women throughout India—urban and rural—that early detection saves lives, and preventive health care is not a luxury, but essential.
