Medanta Noida Launches ‘Colorectal Awareness Tunnel’ to Educate Public on Colon Health and Early Cancer Detection

The installation was inaugurated in the presence of Dr. Deepak Govil, Director – GI Surgery & GI Onco Surgery, Dr. Vivek Tandon-Director – GI Surgery & GI Onco Surgery, Dr. Ajay Bhalla-Director – Gastroenterology, Dr. GC Vaishnav-Director – Internal Medicine, Dr. Sajjan Rajpurohit-Director – Medical Oncology, and Dr. Deepak Mittal-Director – Radiation Oncology. The initiative has been conceptualised by the hospital’s GI and GI Onco Surgery department as part of a broader effort to strengthen community education and promote preventive healthcare.

Speaking about the initiative, Dr. Vivek Tandon, Director – GI Surgery & GI Onco Surgery, Medanta Hospital Noida said,

“Colorectal cancer is one of the most treatable cancers if detected early, yet awareness about screening and early symptoms remains limited. Through the Colorectal Awareness Tunnel, we wanted to create a simple yet impactful educational experience where people can actually visualise what happens inside the colon as the disease progresses. When individuals see how a healthy colon gradually develops polyps and eventually cancer, the importance of early screening becomes much clearer. Our goal is to empower people with knowledge so that they recognise warning signs early and seek timely medical consultation.”

Highlighting the importance of preventive screening, Dr. Deepak Govil, Director – GI Surgery & GI Onco Surgery, Medanta Hospital Noida said,

“Colorectal cancer often develops silently over several years, which is why screening plays a crucial role in saving lives. Many people hesitate to undergo colonoscopy due to myths or lack of awareness. Initiatives like this tunnel help break those barriers by explaining the disease process in a very visual and relatable way. We hope that this initiative will encourage adults, especially those above 40 years of age or with risk factors, to prioritise screening and adopt healthier lifestyles that support colon health.”

The innovative installation recreates the internal structure of the human colon and takes visitors on an immersive journey that demonstrates the progression from a healthy colon to the formation of polyps and eventually to colorectal cancer. As individuals walk through the tunnel, they are guided through different sections that explain risk factors, early warning signs, lifestyle influences, and the importance of timely screening. The visual and interactive format helps simplify complex medical concepts, making them easier to understand for patients, attendants, and members of the general public.

The Colorectal Awareness Tunnel also serves as an engaging platform for preventive health education. Through guided walkthroughs and informative panels, visitors are encouraged to start conversations about symptoms that are often ignored, such as persistent abdominal discomfort, unexplained weight loss, rectal bleeding, or changes in bowel habits. The immersive design allows the audience to better grasp how early changes inside the colon can gradually progress into serious disease if left undetected.

The initiative is designed to reach a diverse audience, including students from nearby schools, community and referral doctors, Resident Welfare Association (RWA) representatives, and residents from the Noida catchment area. Guided visits, educational sessions, and interactive awareness activities will be organised to encourage participation and improve health literacy among different community groups.

Through this awareness drive, Medanta Noida aims to highlight the importance of early detection, dispel myths around colon screening procedures, and reinforce its commitment to advancing patient education and preventive healthcare. The initiative also strengthens the hospital’s position as a leading centre for GI Surgery and GI Oncology while fostering stronger engagement with the community and healthcare professionals alike.
