UDAN 2.0 Signals Shift Toward Sustainable Regional Aviation; Flamingo Aerospace Advocates Indigenous Ecosystem Development

New Delhi, Mar 30: The rollout of UDAN 2.0 marks a significant evolution in India’s regional aviation journey, shifting focus from expanding connectivity to building a more sustainable and economically viable ecosystem.

UDAN 2.0 Signals Shift Toward Sustainable Regional Aviation; Flamingo Aerospace Advocates Indigenous Ecosystem Development

As the next phase unfolds, greater emphasis is expected on route economics, infrastructure readiness, and long-term scalability. With regional networks maturing, the industry is increasingly evaluating aircraft platforms that can efficiently serve short-haul, low-density routes without adding cost pressures on operators.

A critical gap identified in the current ecosystem is the reliance on imported aircraft for regional operations. Industry experts highlight the need for solutions tailored to Indian operating conditions, supported by a robust domestic manufacturing and maintenance ecosystem.

Flamingo Aerospace, which is working on regional aircraft platforms and capability building, sees UDAN 2.0 as a strategic opportunity to align aviation policy with long-term industrial growth.

Subhakar Pappula, Founder & CEO of Flamingo Aerospace, said,

“UDAN 2.0 is pushing India toward a regional aviation framework that is truly built for its geography and economics. With 4.6 billion intercity journeys annually—nearly 90% under 400 nautical miles—the need is clear. This market requires purpose-built turboprop aircraft rather than modified solutions.”

Highlighting suitable aircraft solutions, he added that platforms like the Ilyushin Il-114-300 are well aligned with India’s requirements. With a seating capacity of 66 passengers and a range of 1,450 km, the aircraft is capable of operating from short and even unpaved runways, while performing efficiently across extreme climatic conditions and challenging terrains—from Leh to Lakshadweep.

Addressing structural challenges in regional aviation, Flamingo Aerospace is focusing on:

  • Offering aircraft leases in INR to eliminate foreign exchange risks
  • Developing a domestic training ecosystem with full-flight simulators
  • Building a localized Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) network
  • Enabling technology transfer with a roadmap toward full aircraft assembly in India by 2029

The company plans to begin customization of aircraft platforms by 2027, followed by a phased scale-up toward indigenous assembly, reinforcing India’s ambition to become a global aerospace manufacturing hub.

With initiatives like UDAN 2.0 driving policy momentum, industry stakeholders believe that strengthening domestic capabilities across design, production, and lifecycle support will be key to making regional connectivity more resilient, cost-effective, and future-ready.
