Dividend Season Takes Centre Stage: NTPC, Coal India, ONGC, GAIL and Pharma Stocks in Focus This Week

Mumbai, Aug 31: The Indian stock market is heading into a busy week for corporate actions, with dividends, stock splits and other shareholder-related announcements putting several well-known companies on investors’ radar.

Dividend Season Takes Centre Stage: NTPC, Coal India, ONGC, GAIL and Pharma Stocks in Focus This Week

From large public-sector companies such as NTPC, Coal India, Oil India and ONGC to companies including Glenmark Pharmaceuticals, GAIL (India), Procter & Gamble Hygiene and Health Care and Indigo Paints, a number of stocks are approaching important record or ex-dates between August 31 and September 4. Nearly 90 listed companies are scheduled for various corporate actions during the week, according to market data.

NTPC is among the key stocks to watch. The power major will trade ex-dividend on September 2 for its final dividend of Rs 3.50 per share for FY26. September 2 is also the record date for determining eligible shareholders, with the payout scheduled to be made on or after September 23, subject to applicable tax deductions.

The energy segment will remain particularly active, with Coal India, Oil India and ONGC also featuring among the companies with corporate actions during the week. Their presence is significant for investors tracking dividend income as well as developments in the energy and public-sector space.

The pharmaceutical and consumer segments are also likely to attract attention. Glenmark Pharmaceuticals and Procter & Gamble Hygiene and Health Care are among the companies scheduled for dividend-related actions. Market data shows P&G Hygiene and Health Care has a dividend of Rs 60 per share listed for the relevant ex-date, while Glenmark Pharmaceuticals has a dividend of Rs 1.25 per share.

GAIL (India), Indigo Paints, Triveni Turbine, AIA Engineering, Stove Kraft and other companies are also part of the week’s corporate-action calendar. The wide range of companies involved means investors could see increased stock-specific activity as record dates approach.

Corporate actions can have a direct impact on short-term trading patterns. Ahead of an ex-dividend date, investors often reassess positions based on the expected payout, while stock splits can increase the number of shares held by investors by dividing existing shares into smaller denominations.

However, a stock split does not by itself create additional economic value for shareholders. The number of shares increases while the price is adjusted proportionately, leaving the overall value broadly unchanged immediately after the split, barring market movements.

For dividend-focused investors, the key date is the record date, which determines eligibility for the announced payout. The ex-dividend date is equally important because investors buying shares on or after that date generally do not qualify for the upcoming dividend.

The corporate-action activity comes at a time when investors are already dealing with a volatile market environment shaped by global interest-rate expectations, crude oil movements and geopolitical uncertainty. As a result, company-specific events such as dividends and stock splits could provide additional trading triggers during the week.

With several large-cap energy companies, pharmaceutical names and consumer businesses featuring on the calendar, the first week of September is likely to see investors closely track record dates, ex-dates and the potential impact of these actions on individual stocks.

For the broader market, the activity also highlights the growing importance of shareholder returns as companies use dividends and other corporate actions to distribute value and maintain investor interest.
