New Delhi, Sep 11: August 2026 has emerged as the hottest August ever recorded and tied with July 2023 as the hottest month globally, highlighting the growing intensity of climate change and extreme weather. According to the European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service, the global average surface air temperature in August reached 16.96°C, making it virtually equal to the record set in July 2023.
The temperature was 1.65°C above the estimated pre-industrial average, marking the first month since November 2025 when global temperatures again crossed the 1.5°C level. However, scientists stress that crossing 1.5°C in a single month does not mean the long-term Paris Agreement threshold has been permanently breached. That benchmark is assessed over a much longer period.
The latest record has been linked to the combined effects of long-term global warming and increasingly strong El Niño conditions in the Pacific Ocean. Rising sea temperatures are adding more heat to the atmosphere, while greenhouse gas emissions from human activities continue to drive the broader warming trend.
The oceans have also shown signs of exceptional warming. The average sea-surface temperature across oceans outside the polar regions reached 21.07°C in August, the highest recorded for the month and joint-highest across all calendar months. Scientists are closely monitoring the rapidly developing El Niño, which could strengthen further in the coming months.
The impact of the extreme heat has been particularly visible in Europe. Western Europe experienced its hottest summer on record, surpassing the previous record set in 2003. Several countries faced prolonged and intense heatwaves, while high temperatures and dry conditions put additional pressure on water resources, agriculture and ecosystems.
The effects of rising temperatures are increasingly being felt beyond the environment. Extreme heat can affect agricultural production, water availability, energy demand, public health and economic activity. Businesses and communities are also facing greater risks from heatwaves, droughts, wildfires and other climate-related disruptions.
The August record therefore serves as another reminder of the growing need for climate resilience. Governments, industries and communities will increasingly need to invest in cleaner energy, efficient water management, climate-resilient infrastructure and stronger disaster preparedness.
With El Niño still developing and global temperatures remaining elevated, scientists warn that the recent run of extreme heat may continue.
