New Delhi, Aug 25: The e-Shram portal is set to complete five years on August 26, with 31.89 crore unorganised workers registered on the platform, marking a significant expansion of India’s digital social-security network.
Launched in 2021 by the Ministry of Labour and Employment, e-Shram was created to build a national database of unorganised workers and provide registered workers with a unique Universal Account Number. Over the years, the platform has expanded beyond registration to connect workers with welfare, employment, skill-development, apprenticeship and pension services.
Women account for 54.28 per cent of registered workers, while men represent 45.72 per cent. Workers aged between 18 and 40 years form the largest age group, accounting for 55.21 per cent of registrations.
The platform has also expanded its coverage to gig and platform workers, with around 11.5 lakh registrations in this category. Agriculture, domestic and household work, construction and apparel are among the major occupational groups represented on the portal.
The e-Shram One-Stop Solution brings 15 social-security and welfare schemes together, allowing registered workers to access eligible benefits through a single digital platform. The system also connects workers with employment, skilling and pension-related services.
Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra have recorded the highest number of registrations. Common Service Centres have played a major role in helping workers complete registration, alongside self-registration facilities.
With its growing database and expanding range of services, e-Shram is becoming an important digital platform for improving access to social-security support among India’s unorganised workforce.
