From Cannes to Cleanups: Stolen Actress Mia Maelzer Leads World Ocean Day Drive at Mumbai’s Dadar Beach

What do you get when silver-screen stardom meets sandy shoes and civic action? A rare reel-to-real moment, as internationally acclaimed actress Mia Maelzer turned up at Dadar Chowpatty—not for a shoot, but for a shore cleanup. On the occasion of World Ocean Day, the Kamala Ankibai Ghamandiram Gowani Trust, led by Ms. Nidarshana Gowani, organised a massive beach cleanup that saw citizens, students, and stars come together with one goal: reclaiming Mumbai’s coast.

Stolen actress Mia Maelzer, whose filmography includes international hits like Beyond the Clouds and The Braid, said she was genuinely thrilled to be part of the effort, “I was honestly excited like a kid! The beach isn’t just a backdrop for our lives. It’s part of our soul. Cleaning it with so many passionate people felt like hitting the refresh button for the planet,” said Mia, beaming in a cap and gloves, far removed from the red carpet but still shining with purpose.

She added, “The beach isn’t just a place we visit—it’s where the Earth meets our spirit. Today, we didn’t just clean a beach. We honoured the ocean.”

The actress, whose film Ek Betukey Aadmi Ki Afra Raatein premiered in France and features her in a lead role with Adil Hussain, is also the film’s art director. Her career spans critically acclaimed films and commercial hits (Shaadi Ke Side Effects, Target Kolkata), and she’s received Best Actress nominations at international film festivals in London and France for her role in TikTok.

While Mia brought star power, the event saw spirited participation from Kirti College, Lala Lajpatrai College, and NSS volunteers. Local residents, senior citizens, and morning walkers joined the initiative, collecting heaps of plastic waste and breathing fresh life into the beach.

Nidarshana Gowani, who was hands-on throughout the morning, said, “The ocean begins right here, beneath our feet. When we clean our beaches, we protect the heart of the planet.”
