GST Cut on Sewing Machines to Boost Livelihoods, Empower Women & Youth

Madhav Mani, CEO, Usha International,

“The government’s decision to cut GST on sewing machines from 12% to 5% is a welcome step. This move supports both economic empowerment and social progress. The reduced tax on straight stitch machines will make them more accessible at the grassroots level, opening doors to self-employment and home-based enterprises, especially for women and youth.  The reduction of GST on select automatic sewing machines encourages the adoption of advanced technology and empowers micro-entrepreneurs to scale their work with better efficiency.  At the same time, the lower GST on automatic machines will also boost sewing as a craft and hobby. This reform will boost domestic demand, strengthen local manufacturing, and support national priorities such as Skill India. It is a step that supports livelihood, sustainability, and growth.
