Gurugram: NarayanaSuperspeciality Hospital, Gurugram, led the way by organising a walk for heart along with a tree plantation drive for imparting the message about a healthy heart on the occasion of the World Heart Day on the 29th of September 2019. The president, secretary and about 100 doctors from IMA Gurugram participated in this initiative along with the doctors, paramedics, and staff from NarayanaSuperspeciality Hospital in addition to the local residents. The Walk for Health started at around 7.30 am from NarayanaSuperspeciality Hospital to Safalpark where the Doctors planted the trees before returning to the Hospital.
The hospital had previously organized a free mega heart check-up camp, which included blood sugar test, BP monitoring, ECG and Doctor consultation on the 27th and 28th September to help create awareness about heart disease, cardiac complications and how to maintain a healthy lifestyle to avoid such complications.
According to the World Heart Federation, the theme for this year says My Heart, Your Heart. The main call for action this year’s campaign is to make a promise to keep you and your loved ones healthy. A promise as an individual to get more active, say no to smoking or eat healthy food as a healthcare professional to save more lives or as a policy maker to implement a no communicable disease (NCD) action plan. A simple promise for MY HEART, for YOUR HEART, for ALL OUR HEARTS.
The growing amount of air pollution caused by the smoke emitted by vehicles and factories can be controlled only if we plant more and more trees. Tree plantation is also important because it helps in maintaining the ecological balance in nature. Hence, NarayanaSuperspeciality Hospital felt the responsibility to create awareness about its importance on the occasion of World Heart Day. Ultimately cleaner and purer air will help the citizens in maintaining a healthier lifestyle.
According to World Health Organization (WHO), Cardiovascular Diseases (CVD’S) are the number 1 cause of death globally: more people die annually from CVDs than from any other cause and walking can reduce the chances of Heart stroke. An estimated 17.7 million people died from CVDs in 2015, representing 31% of all global deaths. Of these deaths, an estimated 7.4 million were due to coronary heart disease and 6.7 million were due to stroke.
Prof (Dr.) Hemant Madan, Director Cardiology NarayanaSuperspeciality Hospital, Gurugram added, “Increasing physical activities can be an important step towards a healthier lifestyle. People who are physically active have lower risks of chronic diseases, which include stroke, Type 2 diabetes, cancers, etc. Brisk walking for just 20 minutes a day can help you fight many chronic diseases. While the data suggests that about 11% of the urban adult population is suffering from coronary artery disease, the prevalence in the diabetic population is even higher at 21%. Among patients with coronary artery disease, 10 percent are younger than 50 years and the prominent risk factors among the young population with coronary artery disease include diabetes, smoking, low HDL and most importantly lack of exercise.”
Mr.Prateek Jain, Facility Director, NarayanaSuperspeciality Hospital, Gurugram said, “The incidence of cardiovascular diseases is on a rise in our country and a large chunk of our younger population is now becoming a victim to this, owing to their lifestyle habits. As a group recognised for its renowned heart care, it is our responsibility to raise awareness across levels and this campaign is a step in that direction.”
The event was concluded by felicitation of IMA President Dr. Jai BhagwanBansal and IMA secretory by Dr. Ajay Guptafor their willingness and contribution of valuable time and effort so that the citizens could be made aware of this pressing and serious issue.
