OpenAI Brings ChatGPT Ads to India, Targets 100 Million Plus Weekly Users

New Delhi, Aug 27: OpenAI is rolling out advertisements on ChatGPT in India, bringing a new revenue model to one of its largest markets as the artificial intelligence company looks to monetise its rapidly growing user base.

Ads will be shown to logged-in adults using the Free and Go plans. Sponsored products and services will appear at the bottom of ChatGPT responses and will be clearly labelled and visually separated from the chatbot’s answers.

Subscribers to Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education plans will continue to use ChatGPT without advertisements.

OpenAI said advertisers will not have access to users’ conversations, chat history, memories or personal details. The company also said it does not sell user data to advertisers. Instead, advertisers will receive aggregated campaign-performance information, including metrics such as impressions and clicks.

The company said advertisements would not be displayed on accounts belonging to users under 18 or accounts it identifies as belonging to minors. Ads will also be excluded from conversations involving sensitive or regulated topics, including health, mental health and politics.

More than 50 brands are expected to begin advertising on ChatGPT this week. OpenAI is also set to introduce self-serve access to its ChatGPT Ads Manager in India from September 4, allowing businesses to start campaigns with daily budgets from Rs 725.

The move comes as ChatGPT continues to expand its global audience. The platform crossed 1 billion weekly users earlier this month. India is its second-largest market, with more than 100 million weekly users across students, developers, educators and enterprises as of February 2026.

OpenAI first announced plans to test advertisements on ChatGPT in January 2026 as part of efforts to diversify its revenue streams. The pilot began in the United States in February and was subsequently expanded to Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Mexico, Brazil, Japan and South Korea.

The company launched ChatGPT Ads across 31 European countries last week, including Germany, France, Spain and Italy.

The India expansion gives OpenAI access to one of its largest ChatGPT audiences as it seeks to build advertising into the platform while keeping sponsored content separate from the answers generated for users.
