Rising Heat in Mumbai Sparks Surge in Heatstroke Cases; Brain Health Emerges as Critical Concern

Mumbai, Mar 24: Hospitals across Mumbai are witnessing a sharp increase in heat-related illnesses as temperatures soar, with heatstroke, dehydration, and neurological complications emerging as serious health concerns. The ongoing heatwave, characterized by high humidity, is making it difficult for the body to regulate temperature, increasing the risk of heat exhaustion and heatstroke.

Rising Heat in Mumbai Sparks Surge in Heatstroke Cases; Brain Health Emerges as Critical Concern

Healthcare professionals at Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road, report a growing number of patients presenting with dizziness, confusion, headaches, fatigue, and fainting spells—symptoms often linked to heat exhaustion that can escalate into life-threatening heatstroke if not addressed promptly.

Dr. Pavan Pai, Consultant Interventional Neurologist & Stroke Specialist at Wockhardt Hospitals, stated,

“Extreme heat can severely impact brain health. Dehydration and electrolyte imbalance interfere with normal brain function, affecting concentration, mood, and in severe cases, causing stroke-like symptoms.” He added, “The brain is highly sensitive to temperature changes. When the body overheats, it can impair blood flow to the brain and disrupt neural activity, making timely hydration and cooling measures essential.”

Vulnerable groups—including children, senior citizens, individuals with pre-existing neurological or cardiovascular conditions, outdoor workers, and daily commuters—are at heightened risk. Dr. Pai emphasized, “Even mild dehydration can affect memory, alertness, and decision-making. In extreme situations, heatstroke can lead to brain swelling, seizures, or permanent neurological damage.”

Preventive measures recommended include staying hydrated, consuming electrolyte-rich fluids, avoiding outdoor activity during peak afternoon heat, and taking adequate rest. Construction workers, traffic police, and delivery personnel are among the most exposed to heat-related risks due to prolonged sun exposure.

As Mumbai continues to endure rising temperatures, healthcare experts stress that protecting brain health is as critical as safeguarding the body, highlighting awareness and early intervention as key strategies to stay safe this summer.
