Self-certification of clearances will greatly speed up domestic oil exploration and production, says Anil Agarwal

Chandigarh, October 10th, 2025: Vedanta Ltd Chairman Anil Agarwal has called for a stronger push towards increasing domestic oil production, underscoring its importance for India’s energy security, job creation, and reduction of import dependence.

Reacting to BP’s latest Energy Outlook, which projects India’s oil demand to reach 9 million barrels per day by 2050 from the current 5 million barrels per day, Agarwal said the findings highlight the need for urgent action to boost local exploration and production.

“Today, we only produce 0.6 million barrels per day. We must produce more in India for our energy security, to save on our import bill and to generate jobs,” he said. “Self-certification of clearances will greatly speed up exploration and production,” Agarwal added.

According to BP, India’s economy is expected to grow at an average of 5 per cent annually between 2023 and 2050, almost twice the global rate. While renewables are expected to surge, coal is likely to retain over 40 per cent share in the country’s energy mix under the current trajectory.

Agarwal’s remarks reinforce Vedanta’s commitment to supporting India’s journey towards energy self-reliance. Through its oil and gas arm, Cairn Oil & Gas, Vedanta continues to invest in enhanced exploration and production to help India unlock its domestic hydrocarbon potential.
