Himachal Pradesh October 16th, 2025: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT Mandi) has officially inaugurated its first National Cadet Corps (NCC) unit, marking a significant step in integrating military discipline with advanced technical education. The newly formed Air NCC contingent will operate under the 1 HP Air Squadron NCC, Kullu, and will focus on cutting-edge domains such as aeromodelling, drone systems, artificial intelligence, robotics, and entrepreneurial ventures.
The launch ceremony was led by Prof. Laxmidhar Behera, Director of IIT Mandi; Dr. Tushar Jain, Dean of Students; and Wing Commander Kunal Sharma, Commanding Officer of 1 HP Air Squadron NCC.
This initiative aims to foster the innovative capabilities of India’s top engineering students, channelling them towards national service and defence advancement. The primary goal is to build a team of NCC cadets who exemplify both technological prowess and disciplined patriotism.
Prof. Laxmidhar Behera, Director of IIT Mandi expressed his happiness at the establishment of the IIT Mandi’s first NCC unit, highlighting the synergy between tech-driven thinking and patriotic spirit as a powerful force for nation-building. Dr. Jain commended the collaborative efforts of his team and Wing Commander Sharma in bringing the unit in fruition
Wing Commander Sharma shared his admiration for the enthusiasm shown by IIT Mandi students, noting their strong commitment to military training and national ideals. He remarked that the cadets’ forward-thinking ideas during the selection process reaffirm that India’s future lies in capable and visionary hands.”
The formation of this NCC unit is expected to boost the performance of NCC Group Headquarters Shimla and the PHHP&C Directorate in upcoming national competitions such as the All India Vayu Sainik Camp (AIVSC) and the Republic Day Camp (RDC).
