Jaipur A unique surgery was done by the Department of Surgical Oncology, Bhagwan Mahaveer Cancer Hospital and Research Centre in which a 23 cm tumor weighing 16.8 kg was removed from the stomach of a 55-year-old woman. The surgery, performed by the team of Dr. Prashant Sharma and Dr. Pushplata Gupta, was challenging due to the size and weight of the tumor. After the surgery, which lasted for four hours, the patient is completely healthy and able to walk from the second day itself.
Dr. Sanjeev Patni, Director& HOD, Department of Surgical Oncology, said that the size of the tumor to be operated is usually 2 to 8 cm. Due to ignorance of the tumor in the ovary, it started growing inside the stomach & the tumor grew as much as 23 cm in size. Surgical oncologist Dr. Prashant Sharma said that this woman, a resident of Jhunjhunu, had first come to visit in the hospital five months ago. After the investigations, the woman was advised for surgery, but her family was not ready for it earlier. On December 8 (Wednesday), the patient was brought to the hospital after her condition started getting worse and surgery was done.
Dr. Sharma told that the patient was finding it difficult to walk and breathe, and was not even able to do her daily activities. Seeing her condition, we were pretty sure that the size of the tumor had increased a lot. Due to the size and weight of the tumor, there were several challenges during the surgery, though the biggest challenge was to prevent the tumor from Rupture. The operation was successful because of the skilled anesthesiologist and nursing staff present in the team. On this occasion, Medical Superintendent Dr. Subah Pathania gave information about the facilities and public welfare schemes available in the hospital, as well as about the unique treatment methods done by the doctors.
