Wheelchair Athlete and 70-Year-Old Cancer Survivor Inspire Thousands at GTech Marathon in Kochi

Kochi, Feb 16: The fourth edition of the GTech Marathon at Infopark, Kochi, witnessed inspiring feats of endurance, resilience, and determination as over 10,000 runners from across the globe participated in the event organized by the Group of Technology Companies (G Tech), the industry body representing IT firms in Kerala.

Among the standout participants was Thankaprasad N S, a 70-year-old cancer survivor from Thiruvananthapuram, who completed the 10-km race in 1 hour and 16 minutes. A retired Assistant General Manager, Thankaprasad took up running at the age of 63 to improve his health and has since completed over 100 marathons. Surviving both kidney and prostate cancer, he emphasizes the importance of staying active and urges youngsters to embrace endurance sports as a path to fitness and a drug-free lifestyle. “Running keeps me healthy, and I encourage young people to follow the message promoted by this event: ‘Say No to Drugs, Yes to Fitness,’” he said.

The marathon also featured Niranjan Jadhav, a 54-year-old double amputee from Mumbai, who completed the 21.1-km half marathon in his wheelchair in 2 hours and 43 minutes. Nine years ago, Niranjan lost both his legs in a train accident, but he has since participated in 44 marathons, demonstrating extraordinary courage and perseverance. “I want to encourage persons with disabilities to step out, travel, and participate in sports to stay active and healthy. There is no need to remain indoors when there are so many positive opportunities outside,” Niranjan said.

The marathon included four categories: a 21.1-km half marathon, a 10-km run, and two 3-km fun runs, with participants spanning all age groups and abilities. The event has grown into one of Kerala’s largest initiatives to create awareness against drug abuse while promoting health and fitness.
