Assam Seeks Centre’s Support to Emerge as India’s Next Sporting Hub

June 1: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has sought greater support from the Central government to strengthen the state’s sporting ecosystem and transform Assam into a leading sports destination in the country.

Highlighting Assam’s growing investments in sports infrastructure and athlete development, the Chief Minister said the state has been working steadily to create opportunities for young talent and promote a strong sporting culture. He emphasized that enhanced collaboration between the Centre and the state could accelerate efforts to build world-class facilities, host major sporting events, and nurture athletes capable of competing at national and international levels.

The state government believes that sports can play a vital role in youth empowerment, employment generation, and regional development. Over the past few years, Assam has expanded its sports infrastructure network and launched initiatives aimed at identifying and supporting promising athletes from grassroots levels.

The Chief Minister noted that with strategic investments and policy support, Assam has the potential to emerge as a major sporting centre for the Northeast and the country as a whole. He also underlined the importance of creating an ecosystem that combines infrastructure, coaching, sports science, and talent development.

Sports experts say the Northeast has consistently produced talented athletes across disciplines, and strengthening facilities and training opportunities could further unlock the region’s sporting potential.

As India continues to focus on improving its sporting performance on the global stage, Assam’s vision of becoming a national sports hub aligns with broader efforts to expand the country’s sports infrastructure and talent pipeline.
