New Delhi, June 8: The Government of India has reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with states to achieve the ambitious target of ₹1 lakh crore in seafood exports, marking a significant step towards strengthening the country’s fisheries and aquaculture sector.

As part of the initiative, the Centre is extending support to states through policy measures, infrastructure development, technological advancements, and market expansion strategies aimed at enhancing seafood production and export competitiveness. The collaborative approach seeks to unlock the sector’s full potential while creating sustainable livelihood opportunities for millions dependent on fisheries and allied activities.

The government is focusing on improving aquaculture practices, modernizing processing facilities, strengthening cold-chain infrastructure, and ensuring compliance with international quality and safety standards. These efforts are expected to help Indian seafood products gain greater acceptance in global markets and increase export volumes.

The fisheries sector has emerged as a key contributor to India’s agricultural exports, supporting employment generation, rural development, and economic growth. By fostering greater coordination between the Centre and state governments, the initiative aims to address industry challenges and create an enabling environment for long-term expansion.

Officials highlighted that achieving the ₹1 lakh crore export milestone would not only boost foreign exchange earnings but also enhance the income of fishermen, fish farmers, processors, and exporters across the country.

The government’s renewed focus on the seafood industry underscores its broader vision of strengthening India’s position in global agricultural and marine exports while promoting inclusive and sustainable economic development.
