New Delhi, June 9: The Government e-Marketplace (GeM) has emerged as a transformative force in public procurement, enabling micro and small enterprises to secure government orders worth an impressive ₹8.69 lakh crore, according to official data.
The platform has significantly reshaped the way government departments procure goods and services by creating a fully digital, transparent, and efficient marketplace that enhances accessibility for businesses of all sizes—particularly small and emerging enterprises.
Officials noted that the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) has played a pivotal role in democratizing access to government contracts by reducing entry barriers, simplifying procurement procedures, and ensuring fair competition across vendors.
By digitizing the entire procurement cycle—from vendor registration and product listing to bidding, evaluation, and contract award—the platform has improved speed, accountability, and transparency in public spending.
A major outcome of this system has been the growing participation of micro and small enterprises, many of whom are engaging with government procurement for the first time. This shift has opened new revenue streams, strengthened business sustainability, and expanded market reach for smaller firms across India.
The initiative also reflects a broader policy focus on strengthening the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) ecosystem, which is considered a critical driver of employment generation and economic growth.
Officials emphasized that GeM continues to evolve with new features aimed at improving user experience, enhancing efficiency, and further widening participation from underserved and emerging business segments.
The platform’s success underscores the growing importance of digital governance in building inclusive economic systems and supporting entrepreneurship at scale.
