Guwahati, June 9: Assam’s premium litchi has made its debut in the Dubai market, marking a significant step forward in expanding India’s horticulture exports and opening new international opportunities for farmers in the region.

The export of Assam litchi to the United Arab Emirates is being seen as a positive development for the state’s fruit growers, particularly those engaged in commercial horticulture. Known for its distinct sweetness, aroma, and quality, Assam litchi has gained recognition as a premium produce in domestic markets, and its entry into international trade is expected to strengthen its global presence.

Officials said the development reflects growing demand for Indian horticultural products in global markets and highlights improvements in supply chain logistics, cold storage, and export infrastructure. Better post-harvest management and quality certification systems have also played a key role in enabling such shipments.

The move is expected to benefit farmers by providing better price realisation and reducing dependence on domestic markets alone. It also aligns with broader efforts to promote agricultural exports and enhance farmer incomes through global market integration.

Industry stakeholders believe that the successful shipment to Dubai could pave the way for wider acceptance of Assam litchi in other international markets, further strengthening India’s position in the global fruit export segment.

The government and export agencies are expected to continue supporting farmers with training, infrastructure, and market linkages to scale up horticultural exports in the coming years.

This milestone marks an important step in showcasing India’s agri-produce on the global stage while opening new avenues for sustainable income growth in rural farming communities.
