Gandhinagar, May 14: Gujarat has recorded a nearly 20 per cent increase in tender coconut production over the past two years, with annual output now estimated at around 26 crore coconuts, according to state horticulture data.

The growth reflects the steady expansion of coconut farming across the state’s coastal belt, as more farmers gradually shift towards horticulture-based cultivation for better returns and crop diversification.

Coconut cultivation in Gujarat currently covers nearly 28,000 hectares, with major production coming from coastal districts such as Gir Somnath, Junagadh, Bhavnagar, Valsad, Navsari, Kutch and Devbhumi Dwarka.

Officials say favourable climatic conditions, improved farming practices and rising consumer demand for tender coconut water have contributed to the increase in production. The crop is increasingly being viewed as a stable income source for farmers in coastal regions.

The rise in output is also expected to support local agro-based businesses and strengthen Gujarat’s position in the horticulture sector.
