Gandhinagar, September 24, 2026: The Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IITGN) is expanding its international engagement in semiconductor and advanced technology research through new partnerships with three leading Taiwanese universities.
Memoranda of Understanding (MOU) have been signed with the National Taipei University of Technology (Taipei Tech), National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (Taiwan Tech), and National Central University (NCU). The MoU signing ceremony was attended by Mr Minand Deshpande, Director General, India Taipei Association (ITA), and the Presidents of Taipei Tech, Taiwan Tech and National Central University (NCU). The agreements were concluded during an IITGN delegation’s visit to Taiwan from 20–25 September 2026, undertaken at the invitation of Taiwan’s Ministry of Education. The delegation was led by Prof Rajat Moona, Director, IIT Gandhinagar.
The partnerships aim to strengthen academic and research collaboration in semiconductors, artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies. They will create opportunities for student and faculty exchanges, joint research, knowledge sharing and collaborative talent-development programmes. The visit also marks an important step towards deepening India–Taiwan academic linkages in high-end technology and innovation.
“Our visit to Taiwan has provided an opportunity to engage directly with institutions that have developed strong capabilities in semiconductor technology and advanced engineering. Our discussions with Taipei Tech, Taiwan Tech and National Central University have opened new possibilities for our students and faculty to experience different approaches to research, technology development and talent training. We look forward to translating these conversations into meaningful and sustained academic and research collaborations,” said Prof Rajat Moona, Director, IIT Gandhinagar.
Highlighting the growing educational relationship between the two countries, Dr Kuo-Wei Liu, Deputy Minister, Ministry of Education, Taiwan, said, “Taiwan–India collaboration in higher education and research has grown significantly over the past decade. In 2026, 974 Indian students pursued doctoral degrees in Taiwan – the second-highest number from any country, after Indonesia with 1,081 students. IIT Gandhinagar and its recently established Silicon and Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing Research and Training Hub (SAMARTH) are poised to play a major role in deepening bilateral collaboration in semiconductor education, research and technology development.”
Taiwan has built a globally recognized ecosystem spanning semiconductor manufacturing, technology development and higher education. IIT Gandhinagar, meanwhile, is playing an increasingly important role in India’s semiconductor research and talent-development landscape. Its location in Gujarat, now emerging as a major semiconductor manufacturing hub. This provides a strong foundation for connecting academic research, industry requirements and workforce development.
A key driver of this effort is SAMARTH, established at IIT Gandhinagar to advance semiconductor workforce development, applied research, technology innovation and industry collaboration. The new Taiwanese partnerships are expected to connect SAMARTH and IITGN’s academic programmes with Taiwan’s extensive expertise in semiconductor education, research and manufacturing.
During the visit, the IITGN delegation is also engaging with National Cheng Kung University, National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, Taiwan Tech, Taipei Tech and National Central University, as well as organizations including the Taiwan Semiconductor Research Institute (TSRI) and Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC). These interactions are expected to identify further opportunities for joint research, institutional exchanges, specialized training and long-term technology collaboration.
