Meghalaya CM Unveils Rs.140-Crore Road Project to Strengthen Tourism and Rural Connectivity

Shillong, August 18: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Monday laid the foundation stone for the ₹140-crore upgradation of the Weiloi-Mawkyrwat-Rangthong road in South West Khasi Hills, describing it as a key growth corridor with the potential to accelerate tourism, agriculture, trade and access to essential services.

Financed entirely through state government resources, the project is aimed at improving connectivity in one of Meghalaya’s remote districts and supporting balanced regional development. Sangma said better roads would improve access to healthcare, education and markets while reducing travel time and transportation costs.

The upgraded road is also expected to improve the movement of agricultural produce and strengthen market access for farmers, entrepreneurs and tourism-related businesses. The Chief Minister said more than ₹850 crore worth of projects have been implemented in South West Khasi Hills since 2018, with cumulative commitments now nearing ₹990 crore across roads, drinking water, education, healthcare and tourism.

He also said over 3,200 km of roads have been constructed across Meghalaya during the past eight years. The government said the latest road project reflects its focus on extending development and economic opportunities to remote areas beyond Shillong.
