UPI Sets Fresh Record as August Transactions Surge to 24.51 Billion

New Delhi, Sep : India’s digital payments network reached another major milestone in August, with UPI handling a record 24.51 billion transactions as consumers increasingly turned to instant payments for everyday purchases, money transfers and festive spending.

UPI Sets Fresh Record as August Transactions Surge to 24.51 Billion

Data released by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) showed that the platform processed transactions worth Rs 29.82 lakh crore during the month. While the total value remained just below the previous high of Rs 29.9 lakh crore, the number of payments reached an unprecedented level.

UPI transactions rose from 23.66 billion in July and 22.72 billion in June, continuing a strong growth trend across the digital payments ecosystem. Compared with August 2025, when the platform processed 19.63 billion transactions, the latest volume represents an increase of about 22 per cent.

The rise in transaction numbers points to how deeply digital payments have become part of everyday financial activity in India. UPI is no longer limited to large online purchases or bank transfers. Consumers increasingly use it for small-value payments at neighbourhood shops, restaurants, transport services, online platforms and for sending money to family and friends.

The value of transactions also continued to grow. August’s Rs 29.82 lakh crore was around 20 per cent higher than the Rs 24.85 lakh crore recorded during the same month last year. The figure was, however, marginally below the Rs 29.9 lakh crore recorded in May and July.

The difference between transaction volume and value growth highlights another change in consumer behaviour. People are making payments more frequently, including a growing number of smaller transactions. This reflects the wider adoption of UPI among consumers and merchants across different parts of the country.

Festive spending provided an additional push during the month. Raksha Bandhan brought increased activity in peer-to-peer transfers and digital gifting, while the broader festive shopping season is expected to generate further momentum in the months ahead.

As consumers prepare for major festivals, digital payments are likely to play a larger role in shopping, travel, food, entertainment and gifting. Businesses, particularly small merchants, are also increasingly accepting UPI as a convenient alternative to cash.

The platform’s expansion is no longer confined to India. UPI is now accepted in 11 countries, strengthening its presence as an international digital-payment system. Uzbekistan is the latest country to join the network, alongside Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, France, Mauritius, Nepal, Bhutan, Qatar, Sri Lanka, Cambodia and Greece.

The latest numbers also underline how dramatically India’s payments landscape has changed since UPI was introduced in 2016. What began as a new digital payment mechanism has grown into a widely used part of everyday commerce.

NPCI data shows that the value of UPI transactions increased from Rs 0.07 lakh crore in FY17 to around Rs 314 lakh crore in FY26. The extraordinary rise over the past decade reflects the rapid adoption of smartphones, digital banking and instant account-to-account payments.

For businesses, the growth of UPI is creating a larger digital customer base and making it easier for even small merchants to participate in the formal digital economy. For consumers, the platform has made transferring money and paying for goods and services faster and more convenient.

The next phase of growth could be driven by the expansion of digital payments in smaller towns, increased merchant adoption and rising consumer spending during India’s festive season.

With transaction volumes already at record levels, UPI’s latest milestone reinforces its position at the heart of India’s digital economy. The platform’s growth also signals a broader shift in consumer behaviour, where digital payments are becoming less of an alternative to cash and increasingly the preferred way to pay.
