From Movement to Recovery: The Role of Robotics in Modern Physiotherapy

New Delhi,  Sep 16: Technology is changing the way physiotherapy is delivered, and robotics is becoming an increasingly useful part of modern rehabilitation. Robotic devices are now being used alongside conventional physiotherapy to help patients practise movements in a more controlled, consistent and repeatable way.

Robotic rehabilitation can support patients who have difficulty performing certain movements on their own. Depending on the technology being used, robotic systems can assist with walking, arm and hand movements and other exercises. The level of support can also be adjusted as a patient becomes stronger and more independent.

 
This is particularly relevant in neurological rehabilitation, including recovery after stroke. Recent research has found that robotic and electromechanical gait training, when used alongside physiotherapy, can help some stroke patients improve their ability to walk independently. Research into robotic therapy for the upper limbs has also shown potential benefits in areas such as arm movement and daily activities, although outcomes can vary depending on the patient, the device and the rehabilitation programme.
 
Robotics can also help therapists better understand how a patient is progressing during treatment. Some rehabilitation systems can track movement, repetitions and other measures during a session, giving therapists useful information that can help them monitor progress and adjust therapy

As these technologies continue to develop, their role in physiotherapy is also likely to evolve. What remains at the heart of rehabilitation, however, is helping patients move better, become more independent and regain confidence in everyday life.
