Pune, Aug 11: Doctors at Manipal Hospital Kharadi successfully removed a rare 17 cm benign spinal tumour from a 52-year-old senior IT engineer from Pune. The patient had been wheelchair-bound for nearly seven years due to progressive compression of the spinal cord. After advanced microscopic spine surgery, he has regained the ability to stand, walk with support, and gradually return to his daily routine.
The patient Mahesh Patil first experienced persistent pain and numbness in his left leg. Despite consulting several doctors, the cause remained undiagnosed for a long time. As the condition progressed, he developed severe weakness in both legs and gradually lost the ability to walk. The illness affected both his personal and professional life. He was unable to travel for work, sit for long hours, or perform routine activities independently. An MRI scan later revealed a giant spinal tumour, following which he was referred to Manipal Hospital Kharadi for advanced treatment.
Speaking about the case, Dr. Pravin Survashe, Consultant – Spine Surgery, Manipal Hospital Kharadi, said,
“The patient was diagnosed with a giant intradural extramedullary (IDEM) schwannoma measuring nearly 17 cm. Schwannomas are usually benign tumours arising from the covering of spinal nerves. However, because this tumour was located within the spinal canal, it was compressing the spinal cord and causing severe neurological weakness. Such large spinal tumours are uncommon and require meticulous planning. If left untreated, the patient was at risk of permanent paralysis, loss of bladder and bowel control, and irreversible nerve damage.”
He further added,
“The surgery was performed using advanced microscopic spinal techniques and a high-magnification operating microscope. This helped us remove the tumour safely while protecting the spinal cord and surrounding nerves. The patient has shown encouraging recovery. Two months after surgery, he was able to stand independently, walk with a walker, and has started walking short distances without support. With continued rehabilitation, we expect further improvement in his mobility and quality of life.”
