Paradip, Sept. 9 (UDN): Seventeen years after the Mongolian-flagged cargo vessel MV Black Rose sank off Odisha’s Paradip coast, questions surrounding the incident continue to linger, keeping one of the region’s most controversial maritime episodes in public memory.

The iron ore-laden vessel went down in the anchorage area of Paradip Port on September 9, 2009. The incident claimed the life of the ship’s chief engineer and subsequently triggered scrutiny over the vessel, its documentation, cargo and movement.
Sinking Sparked Political Controversy
The Black Rose incident soon became a major political issue in Odisha, with the matter being raised in the State Assembly.
Opposition parties at the time sought a CBI investigation, alleging that several aspects of the vessel’s operations and transportation of iron ore required a deeper probe.
Over the years, questions have continued to surface over the progress of the investigation and whether all aspects of the case were adequately examined.
Maritime Safety Concerns Resurface
The Black Rose controversy has once again attracted attention following the recent sinking of MV Ocean Winner in the Bay of Bengal.
The two incidents have prompted renewed discussions about maritime safety, vessel documentation, cargo handling and stability of bulk carriers operating along Odisha’s coastline.
Former cargo ship captain Premananda Rout pointed to similarities between the two incidents, suggesting that cargo shifting could have contributed to loss of stability.
He said the Black Rose had also sunk south of Paradip in circumstances that raised questions about the vessel’s stability.
Old Questions Remain
The anniversary of the Black Rose disaster has revived several unanswered questions: what precisely led to the vessel’s sinking, whether there were any irregularities involving its cargo or documentation, and whether those responsible, if any, were identified and held accountable.
With the passage of nearly two decades, the incident remains a reference point in discussions on maritime safety and regulatory oversight along Odisha’s coast.
For many, the enduring mystery surrounding the Black Rose is not merely about how the vessel sank, but whether the complete circumstances behind the tragedy were ever conclusively established.
