New Delhi, Sep 15: A growing number of farmers and agricultural organisations in India are exploring regenerative farming practices as the country looks for ways to protect soil health, manage rising cultivation challenges and make farms more resilient to changing weather conditions.
Regenerative agriculture puts the health of the soil at the centre of farming. Instead of depending mainly on higher use of external inputs to increase production, the approach focuses on improving natural soil processes so that farmland remains productive over the long term.
Farmers can use a combination of practices such as crop rotation, cover crops, mulching, reduced soil disturbance, organic inputs and agroforestry. The choice of practices varies according to the crop, soil type, climate and availability of water in each region.
For farmers, the condition of the soil can directly influence the economics of cultivation. Soil with better organic matter and water-holding capacity can support healthier crops and may reduce the pressure on irrigation and certain agricultural inputs over time.
This becomes particularly important as farmers face increasingly unpredictable weather. Periods of drought, excessive rainfall, heat and soil degradation can affect crop yields and farm incomes. Healthier soils can improve the ability of farmland to retain moisture and withstand some of these stresses.

However, shifting to regenerative methods is not always straightforward. Small and marginal farmers may need training, technical advice and access to suitable inputs before they can confidently change established farming practices.
Economic returns are equally important. Farmers are more likely to adopt new methods when they can clearly see how the changes can improve productivity, reduce costs or strengthen income stability. Demonstration farms and local agricultural extension programmes can help provide practical evidence.
Technology can further support farmers during this transition. Soil testing, weather forecasts, digital advisory platforms and precision irrigation tools can help growers make better decisions about water, nutrients and crop management.
The growing interest in regenerative agriculture also reflects wider concerns around India’s agricultural sustainability. Rising input costs, pressure on water resources, changing climatic conditions and the need to maintain food production are encouraging greater attention towards farming methods that protect the productive capacity of land.
For India’s rural economy, maintaining healthy farmland is closely connected with protecting livelihoods. When soil quality deteriorates, farmers can face higher cultivation costs and greater production risks. Improving soil health, therefore, can become an investment in the long-term stability of farming communities.
There is no single regenerative farming model that can be applied uniformly across India. Successful adoption will depend on local crops, climatic conditions, soil characteristics, water availability and the economic needs of farmers.
As more farmers experiment with soil-friendly practices and evidence of their economic benefits grows, regenerative agriculture could become an important component of India’s efforts to build a more sustainable and climate-resilient farming economy.
