India Urged to Adopt New Urban Transport Policy Amid Rapid Vehicle Growth

New Delhi, June 8: Transport experts have called for the formulation of a comprehensive and forward-looking urban mobility policy as India’s registered vehicle fleet crosses 413 million, highlighting mounting pressure on urban infrastructure, traffic systems, and environmental sustainability.

According to experts, the sharp rise in private and commercial vehicles across cities has outpaced the development of public transport systems and road infrastructure. This imbalance has contributed to increasing congestion, longer travel times, and rising vehicular emissions in major urban centres.

They have stressed the need for a shift towards integrated urban transport planning that prioritises efficient public transport networks, improved last-mile connectivity, and sustainable mobility solutions such as electric vehicles, cycling infrastructure, and pedestrian-friendly city design.

Policy specialists also emphasised stronger coordination between central, state, and urban local bodies to ensure balanced transport development and prevent unplanned urban expansion. They noted that fragmented planning has often led to inefficiencies in urban mobility systems.

The call for reform comes amid growing concerns over air pollution, road safety, and declining urban liveability in several Indian cities, where transport demand continues to rise rapidly.

Experts believe that a modern urban transport policy is essential to ensure sustainable mobility, reduce environmental impact, and improve overall quality of life in India’s fast-growing cities.
