May 19: Indian Railways has approved a major infrastructure upgrade with the sanction of the ₹993 crore Arakkonam–Chengalpattu railway line doubling project, aimed at enhancing capacity and improving operational efficiency on one of Tamil Nadu’s key rail corridors.
The project will focus on doubling the existing single-line section between Arakkonam and Chengalpattu, which is expected to ease congestion, reduce travel delays, and support faster movement of passenger and freight trains.
Officials said the upgrade will significantly improve connectivity across important industrial and suburban regions, strengthening the rail network in southern India. The enhanced line capacity is also expected to support future traffic growth and contribute to regional economic development.
Indian Railways noted that the project forms part of its broader strategy to expand infrastructure, improve reliability, and modernise key routes across the country.
