Every year on 31st October, India comes together to celebrate Rashtriya Ekta Diwas (National Unity Day) — a day dedicated to honouring the vision, determination, and nation-building spirit of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, fondly remembered as the Iron Man of India. This year holds even greater significance as the nation marks the 150th birth anniversary of this towering leader, whose tireless efforts helped shape the India we know today. The Architect of a United India

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel played a pivotal role in integrating over 560 princely states into the Indian Union after independence — a herculean task that required diplomacy, courage, and an unwavering commitment to national unity. His leadership during those formative years ensured that India, emerging from the shadow of colonial rule, remained intact and strong despite immense challenges.

Patel’s contribution extended beyond political unification. As the first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister of India, he laid the foundation of a unified administrative system and championed the values of good governance, integrity, and public service. His pragmatic approach to challenges continues to inspire leaders and citizens alike.

Commemorating the 150th Jayanti in Kevadia

On the occasion of his 150th Jayanti, the nation paid heartfelt homage to Sardar Patel through a series of programmes held in Kevadia, Gujarat — home to the iconic Statue of Unity, the world’s tallest statue dedicated to him.

The day’s celebrations included the flagging off of electric buses, a step towards sustainable transport for the thousands of visitors who come to Kevadia each year. This initiative embodies the harmony between development and environmental responsibility — values that align with Patel’s vision of a strong yet self-reliant India.

A special cultural programme showcased Sardar Patel’s life — his deep involvement in India’s freedom struggle, his leadership in integrating the nation, and his wisdom in steering India through the turbulent post-independence years.
In a moving tribute, a commemorative coin and postal stamp were also released, symbolising the nation’s gratitude and respect for his immense contribution.

A touching moment of the day was the interaction with Sardar Patel’s family, a reminder of the human warmth and humility that defined him as much as his strength and resolve.

Rashtriya Ekta Diwas: A Call for Oneness

Instituted in 2014, Rashtriya Ekta Diwas is not merely a remembrance of Patel’s legacy — it is a call to action for every Indian to uphold the spirit of unity, integrity, and collective progress. Schools, colleges, and government institutions across the country observe the day with pledges, runs for unity, and cultural events, reaffirming the nation’s shared commitment to oneness.

In today’s fast-changing world, the message of Rashtriya Ekta Diwas feels more relevant than ever. It reminds us that India’s greatest strength lies in its diversity — bound together by a shared sense of purpose and belonging.

A Vision that Continues to Inspire

As India celebrates Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s 150th birth anniversary, the nation looks back with gratitude and looks forward with determination. His life teaches us that unity is not just about geography — it is about hearts, values, and vision.
May the spirit of oneness and national integrity continue to guide our journey toward a strong, united, and self-reliant India — the India that Sardar Patel dreamt of.
