India’s leading multi-disciplinary architectural and engineering firm, C P Kukreja Architects (CPKA), is declared as the winner in New and Innovative Town Design Solutions/Eco-Cities for their project of HRRL Township in Barmer, Rajasthan. The HUDCO Design Awards are the most distinguished design awards in the country, recognising pioneering sustainable design projects.

The Township flourishes as a sustainable endeavour with features such as low-rise edifices with local Rajasthani architectural elements, dense natural vegetation, open and shared recreational areas and a well spread out water body that maintains the micro-climate within and around the site. Currently, in process of construction, the site is located adjacent to HRRL’s upcoming oil refinery and in the interiors of Thar Desert.

The form and layout of the Township sought inspiration from Johad (an oasis). The true meaning of that, in desert environments, is ‘an isolated area of desert vegetation, typically surrounding a water source which provides a protected habitat for flora and fauna including humans.’ The township will be a ‘smart’ and sustainable with a deep focus on water conservation and management.

The project of HRRL Township is a joint venture company (HRRL) between Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited and Government of Rajasthan. It is conceptualised as a self-sufficient township for the employees of this major Indian oil company. It was awarded to the Architects through a national competition.
