Bhubaneswar, 25th October 2025: A 22-year-old student from Paradeep, Ms. P. Madhusmita, has been successfully treated for a rare Desmoid Tumour involving the full thickness of the abdominal wall at Manipal Hospital, Bhubaneswar. The complex case required meticulous planning and a multidisciplinary surgical approach to ensure a successful outcome.
Ms. Madhusmita, a graphic design student, first noticed swelling and pain in her lower abdomen during an NCC drill practice while attending a Republic Day Camp in Delhi. Initially dismissing it as a minor issue, she later observed a gradual increase in the swelling over six months. Further discomfort during physical activities prompted her to seek medical evaluation.
At Manipal Hospital Bhubaneswar, she underwent detailed imaging, including MRI and HRCT of the thorax, followed by a USG-guided biopsy, which revealed a spindle cell neoplasm. Based on the findings, the patient was planned for surgical intervention.
During the surgery, doctors discovered a large 15 x 10 cm mass infiltrating the entire abdominal wall. The case demanded precision and teamwork from multiple surgical specialties. The resection of the tumour was performed by Dr. Nitish Ranjan Acharya, Consultant – Surgical Oncology, followed by abdominal wall reconstruction using mesh hernioplasty by Dr. Ramya Ranjan Behera, Consultant – General Surgery, and pedicle flap coverage by Dr. Biswajit Mishra, Consultant – Plastic Surgery.
Post-surgery, the final histopathology confirmed the diagnosis as a Desmoid Tumour — a rare, benign but locally aggressive tumour which originate from connective tissue and, while they do not spread to distant organs, their aggressive local behaviour and tendency to recur often necessitate a multidisciplinary treatment approach, combining surgical excision with careful post-operative follow-up. The postoperative period was uneventful, and the patient made a smooth recovery.
“This case highlights the strength of multidisciplinary collaboration and clinical excellence at Manipal Hospital Bhubaneswar. The coordinated efforts of our oncological, surgical, and reconstructive teams ensured complete removal of the tumour with excellent functional and cosmetic results,” said Dr. Nitish Ranjan Acharya, Surgical Oncologist, Manipal Hospital Bhubaneswar.
Ms. Madhusmita is leading a healthy, active life. She expressed heartfelt gratitude to the team at Manipal Hospital Bhubaneswar for their expert care and compassionate support, which not only aided her recovery but also helped her regain confidence and seamlessly return to her normal routine.
