New Delhi, May 26: Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal on Monday said India’s maritime sector is undergoing a historic transformation under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, driven by reforms, innovation and improved connectivity.
To mark 12 years of maritime growth and policy reforms, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways will organise a nationwide “Maritime Reform Utsav”, showcasing India’s achievements in ports, shipping, inland waterways, coastal infrastructure, green shipping and digital transformation.
Chairing a high-level review meeting with senior officials, the minister outlined a reform-oriented roadmap focused on strengthening governance, enhancing ease of doing business (EoDB), accelerating digital integration and ensuring time-bound implementation of major maritime initiatives.
“Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visionary leadership, India’s maritime sector has emerged as a modern, efficient and globally competitive ecosystem guided by the mantra of ‘Reform, Perform, Transform and Inform’,” Sonowal said.
In a major push towards digital governance, the ministry also announced plans to develop an integrated digital platform and mobile application under the Directorate General of Shipping. The platform will provide real-time services, digital documentation, stakeholder support and an efficient grievance redressal mechanism through a unified maritime digital ecosystem.
The minister further emphasised the importance of stronger coordination among ministries, state governments, port authorities and industry stakeholders to ensure faster execution of maritime and logistics projects.
A dedicated monitoring and coordination committee will also be constituted to review progress, track commitments and ensure effective implementation of key strategic initiatives.
The upcoming Maritime Reform Utsav is expected to highlight India’s growing role as a leading global maritime nation and reinforce the government’s commitment to sustainable and technology-driven maritime development.
