The Galaxy Z Fold8 Series: A Leap in Foldable Technology

Chandigarh, Aug 13: Samsung Electronics introduced the eighth generation of its Galaxy Z series, featuring the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, Galaxy Z Fold8, and Galaxy Z Flip8, last month on July 22. These devices mark a significant leap in foldable technology, driven by years of user insights and engineering innovation, solidifying their position as the Best Foldable in the market.

After the successful launch, Sunghoon Moon, Executive Vice President and Senior Executive of Mobile R&D Office – Hardware, Mobile eXperience (MX) Business at Samsung Electronics, shared his insights on the company’s user-centric approach to engineering.

“From the beginning, we saw foldables as an opportunity to redefine how people interact with their smartphones,” he said. “Through seven generations, we’ve learned how people open, carry, unfold, and rely on their devices.”

The insights gained from users shaped Samsung’s engineering priorities: larger, more immersive displays, thinner and lighter designs without compromising durability, and ultra-performance while preserving the unique advantages of the foldable form factor. Samsung’s approach to foldable innovation, he explained, is rooted in engineering “one connected system.”

“With foldables, every component is interconnected,” Moon said. “Making a device thinner, for example, means redesigning the display, hinge, battery, thermal system, and internal architecture together… This end-to-end engineering philosophy extends from materials and component design to manufacturing validation and the final product experience – allowing engineering advancements to become improvements people experience every day.”

Samsung disclosed that its new Galaxy Z series introduces Flex Titanium technology that makes the foldables thinner and lighter. Titanium—known for its strength and resistance to deformation in demanding industries like aerospace—was selected for its suitability in foldable displays. Samsung’s Flex Titanium engineering combines two titanium-based elements: a titanium plate beneath the display for structural support and a precision-engineered lattice structure for flexibility and structural strength. Additionally, a titanium-alloy film beneath the display panel ensures added strength, flexibility, and elastic recovery for repeated folding.

“Together these innovations strengthened the display support structure while reducing display module thickness by 10%, creating additional space for the battery, thermal system, and camera,” Moon said. “For users, this translates into a thinner, lighter device with a flatter immersive display and reduced crease visibility.”

Samsung also reengineered the battery system to meet user expectations for longer battery life, faster charging, and a slimmer form factor. The Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra features a 5,000 mAh battery with a silicon-carbon anode to improve energy density. “We developed charging architectures tailored to each foldable form factor. The Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra and Galaxy Z Fold8 use a dual-path charging architecture that helps distribute power more efficiently across the battery system.”

As a result, he says, the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra supports 45W fast charging to reach a 67% charge in just 30 minutes.

Moon disclosed that Samsung subjected the latest Galaxy Z series to over 100 reliability validation tests covering real-world conditions such as drops, repeated folding, pressure, moisture, and debris. “Durability isn’t just about design; it must be proven through testing,” Moon stated. These efforts ensure that foldables can withstand years of everyday use.

Looking back at the development process, Moon highlighted Samsung’s commitment to transforming user insights into innovations: “Everything starts with the user. Over seven generations, we’ve transformed user insights into innovations in materials, components, and the overall device experience.” This philosophy continues to guide the Galaxy Z series, delivering foldables that are thinner, more durable, more capable, and more intuitive year after year.

The Galaxy Z series represents Samsung’s dedication to pushing the boundaries of foldable technology while prioritising user needs. With Flex Titanium and advanced battery technology, these devices, he averred, set a new standard for durability and performance in the foldable category, further cementing their status as the Best Foldable with an immersive display.
