Health Ministry Launches JANANI Digital Platform to Strengthen Maternal and Child Healthcare

New Delhi, May 8: The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has launched JANANI, a digital platform aimed at strengthening maternal and child healthcare services across the country.

The platform was unveiled during the National Summit on Innovation and Inclusivity – Best Practices Shaping India’s Health Future. JANANI, which stands for Journey of Antenatal, Natal and Neonatal Integrated Care, has been developed as an upgraded version of the existing Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) portal.

According to the ministry, JANANI is designed to comprehensively monitor and maintain digital health records of women during their reproductive years by creating longitudinal health records covering the entire continuum of care. The platform tracks key maternal and child healthcare services, including antenatal care, delivery preparedness, childbirth, postnatal care, newborn care and family planning.

One of the key features of the platform is the introduction of QR-enabled digital Mother and Child Health cards, allowing easy portability and access to health records. JANANI also provides automated alerts for high-risk pregnancies, real-time dashboards for supervisory monitoring and due-list generation to support timely interventions.

Officials said the platform has been built with interoperability features that allow integration with national initiatives such as U-WIN and POSHAN Abhiyaan. This is expected to improve coordination among healthcare programmes and facilitate comprehensive monitoring of beneficiaries.

The platform enables beneficiary registration through ABHA, Aadhaar-based authentication and mobile numbers, while also supporting self-registration through web and mobile applications. The ministry said this would ensure continuity of care for migratory populations and reduce duplication of records.

JANANI also supports scheduling and monitoring of antenatal visits and immunisation services through reminders and alerts. Beneficiaries can access digital MCH cards, information on nearby healthcare facilities and guidance related to nutrition and maternal health.

The Health Ministry said the platform represents a major structural reform in maternal and child healthcare administration by integrating digital authentication, real-time monitoring and inter-sectoral convergence to improve service delivery and reduce maternal and child mortality.

According to official data, JANANI has already recorded 1.34 crore beneficiary registrations, including over 30 lakh registrations of pregnant women, generation of more than 30 lakh MCH cards and over one lakh biometric verifications.
