IndiaAI, ICMR Sign MoU to Promote Responsible AI Adoption in Healthcare

AI Adoption in Healthcare

New Delhi, May 8: IndiaAI and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) on Wednesday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen the use of Artificial Intelligence in healthcare and biomedical research.

The partnership, led under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology through the Digital India Corporation, aims to create a nationally integrated and interoperable AI ecosystem for healthcare by combining IndiaAI’s technological infrastructure with ICMR’s expertise in biomedical research and public health.

Under the agreement, ICMR will contribute anonymised and ethics-approved health datasets, AI models and toolkits developed under its Medical Information Data for AI Solutions (MIDAS) framework to the AIKosh platform. The initiative is expected to improve access to quality biomedical datasets for researchers, startups and innovators working in healthcare AI.

IndiaAI will also provide ICMR with subsidised access to GPU-based and high-performance computing infrastructure to support advanced AI research and deployment in the medical sector. Officials said the move would help address critical infrastructure gaps in scaling AI-driven healthcare innovation.

The collaboration will further focus on developing AI-powered solutions for priority public health challenges using ICMR’s disease burden data and IndiaAI’s technology ecosystem. Both institutions said the partnership would support responsible innovation while maintaining ethical standards, data privacy and regulatory compliance.

The MoU builds on earlier collaborations between the two institutions. In September 2025, IndiaAI and ICMR’s National Institute for Research in Digital Health and Data Sciences were recognised as Pioneer Countries under the HealthAI Global Regulatory Network initiative, co-founded with the United Kingdom and Singapore.

Officials said the latest agreement is expected to accelerate innovation at the intersection of technology and public health and strengthen India’s position in the responsible use of AI for healthcare solutions.
