May 19: Sierra Leone has strengthened surveillance measures along its borders following fresh Ebola outbreaks reported in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda, as the African Union (AU) voiced serious concern over the spread of the deadly virus in parts of Central and East Africa.
Health authorities in Sierra Leone said monitoring at key entry points has been intensified to prevent any possible cross-border transmission. Screening procedures, public health awareness campaigns, and emergency response preparedness have also been stepped up as a precautionary measure.
The African Union, meanwhile, called for greater regional coordination and urgent public health action to contain the outbreaks before they spread further across the continent. Officials stressed the importance of rapid detection, contact tracing, and community awareness in controlling the virus.
Both Congo and Uganda have previously battled multiple Ebola outbreaks, with health agencies continuing efforts to contain infections and protect vulnerable communities.
Regional health experts have warned that increased cross-border movement could heighten the risk of transmission if surveillance and response systems are not strengthened quickly.
Authorities across affected and neighbouring countries remain on alert as efforts continue to prevent a wider public health crisis.
