23-Year-Old Tushar Kumar Becomes Youngest Indian-Origin Mayor in UK

May 19: A 23-year-old councillor, Tushar Kumar, has been appointed as the Mayor of Elstree and Borehamwood, becoming the youngest Indian-origin individual to hold a mayoral position in the United Kingdom.

The appointment was formally confirmed during the Mayor Making Ceremony held at Fairway Hall in Borehamwood on May 13. Kumar previously served as Deputy Mayor before assuming the ceremonial role for the new civic year.

Kumar, who studied Political Science at King’s College London, has been actively involved in local governance and community initiatives in Borehamwood. His elevation to mayor marks a significant milestone in his early political career.

Expressing gratitude after his appointment, Kumar called the moment “an incredible honour” and reflected on his journey from university student to civic leadership. He also thanked outgoing Mayor Councillor Dan Ozarow for his mentorship and support during his tenure as Deputy Mayor.

“A special thank you to outgoing Mayor Cllr Dan Ozarow for his dedicated service to our town and for his guidance and support during my time as Deputy Mayor,” Kumar said.

Councillor Linda Smith has been appointed as Deputy Mayor for the upcoming civic year.

As Mayor, Kumar said he aims to focus on strengthening community engagement, supporting local charities, and encouraging greater participation of young people in public service and civic life
