South Korea’s Auto Exports Fall Over 5% in April Amid Middle East Tensions

May 20: South Korea’s automobile industry experienced a notable slowdown in April, with exports dropping by over 5% compared to the previous month. Industry experts attribute the decline to escalating tensions in the Middle East, which have disrupted shipping routes and caused delays in international trade.

Major South Korean automakers, which rely heavily on overseas markets in the Middle East, faced logistical challenges due to rising geopolitical uncertainty and heightened shipping costs. In addition, supply chain constraints affecting parts and components further contributed to the slowdown in exports.

Officials from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy emphasized that the government is actively monitoring the situation, coordinating with industry stakeholders, and implementing measures to support exporters during this period of global instability. Analysts note that while short-term fluctuations are expected, South Korea’s automotive sector remains resilient, driven by innovation, strong global demand, and diversified export markets.
