Bhubaneswar, May 21: Jharsuguda is reeling under an intense and persistent heatwave, emerging as one of the hottest locations in Odisha. Rising daytime temperatures combined with unusually warm nights have made conditions extremely difficult, forcing residents to limit outdoor activity and stay indoors during peak hours.
The current spell of heat has brought temperatures close to historic May records, which have previously crossed 47°C in the region. The extreme conditions are being felt across daily life, with reduced mobility during the day and discomfort continuing well into the night.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning indicating that no significant relief is expected until at least May 24, as the heatwave conditions are likely to persist across the state.
A severe heatwave alert has been issued for districts including Sambalpur and Balangir. Night temperatures are also expected to remain above normal levels in parts of western Odisha, including Sundargarh, adding to the ongoing discomfort.
In coastal regions of Odisha, daytime temperatures are relatively lower, ranging between 36°C and 38°C, but high humidity levels exceeding 70% are making conditions feel significantly hotter and more exhausting.
Authorities have advised residents to avoid outdoor exposure during peak hours between 11 am and 3 pm, stay hydrated, and take extra care of children, the elderly, and those with health conditions.
With no immediate change in weather patterns expected, the severe summer conditions are likely to continue affecting normal life across the region in the coming days.
