Bhubaneswar, May 22: Residents of Bhubaneswar are continuing to face extreme discomfort due to persistently high humidity combined with rising temperatures, even during early morning hours. At around 5:30 am today, the city recorded a temperature of 31.4°C with 84% relative humidity, pushing the Heat Index to a severe 44°C based on NOAA (USA) calculations.
The pattern of oppressive conditions has persisted over the past four days, with the “feels-like” temperature remaining consistently high and making outdoor movement difficult even before sunrise. Heat Index readings have ranged between 39°C and 44°C during this period, driven largely by sustained moisture levels in the atmosphere.
According to meteorological observations, humidity levels between 84% and 90% are significantly reducing the body’s ability to cool itself through sweating, intensifying the discomfort across the city. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has stated that Bhubaneswar and other parts of coastal Odisha continue to experience hot and humid weather conditions.
Daytime temperatures have also remained high, with some areas recording above 42°C in recent days. While isolated thundershowers may occur in parts of the state, they are unlikely to provide substantial relief from the prevailing humidity.
Authorities have urged residents to take necessary precautions, including maintaining hydration, avoiding outdoor activity during peak heat hours, and taking special care of children, elderly citizens, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions.
